FYI: What you missed last meeting –
11:00AM - PIZZA! Kent Lamb - category specialist in the southern region presented this month's topic. Kent brought a demo of OES server & NLD desktop with Linux Novell client and GW7. Kent talked about Novell's commitment to NetWare, & about other products, especially ones in public beta. NetWare is not going away, the name is, it will be referred to OES, the NCP kernel is not going away. Novell will be committing to another 15 yrs of development on the NetWare/NCP kernel. In 1999 Novell started moving away from being NetWare centric to services, splitting the services off to all other platforms. Some major companies like Oracle start coding on SLES, as does SAP. Novell picked SuSE because the worldwide familiarity, the organized commercial pricing structure, the SINGLE codebase between the different versions & even hardware platforms, which simplifies the write once run on any version of (SuSE) Linux. GroupWise 7 – the outlook plugin for GroupWise was actually developed with cooperation from the Outlook team at Microsoft (much to the chagrin of the exchange group). The outlook team simply wants their client in front of as many people as possible, they didn't care about the backend. Xplat client now has feature parity (spell check!) Edir 88 – encryption for attributes (say for SS# or such). Defined sync schedule. Multiple trees on one box. Define port listening on. SLES – apparmour – yast plugin for memory protection on servers for security (SE). ZLM (zenworks Linux management, formerly known as red carpet) – feature parity is nearing win/lin. Novell is farming out a building on the Provo campus dedicated to programmers who want to certify their product on SLES, Novell is willing to pay for part of that & provide a place to do the coding. BMEE/Astero – Linux appliance – antispyware & anti adware blocking. Novell security manager & bmee will merge.

What is File System Factory?
File System Factory is a key component of Novell's Secure Identity Management solution set. File System Factory provides new and dynamic levels of automation and management for NetWare file services, which to this point have not been possible. File System Factory enables policy-based lifecycle provisioning and de-provisioning of personal and group storage. As a result, your business can simplify access and management of storage, based on users' identities. Regardless of how you create, move or delete user and group accounts in the directory, Novell File System Factory responds to these events by automatically creating, moving or deleting disk storage on NetWare. With File System Factory, your business can effortlessly keep pace with the storage demands of a busy, large-scale organization and reduce support costs. It supports most popular namespaces-including Long, Macintosh and UNIX namespaces-and also ensures load balancing across traditional NetWare volumes and volumes based on Novell Storage Services and Novell Cluster Services.

The product roadmap includes a future File System Factory for SuSE Linux and Microsoft Active Directory.
